You may be asking yourself what the VFW does in our local communities, in Michigan or around the world? Well, here is a sampling of the programs and services currently offered by the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars its Auxiliaries and friends...

VFW National Home for Children is a community development in a family like environment that is home to orphaned or single parent children of VFW or Ladies Auxiliary members. The home, which was established in 1925 on 160 acres in Eaton Rapids, Mich., emphasizes the values of education, good work habits and sound moral character.

Camp Trotter: The Department of Michigan, Veterans of Foreign Wars owns and operates a children's camp at Bills lake in Newaygo, MI. You can also support Camp Trotter by becoming a Life Member

Citizenship Education program is designed to stimulate interest in America's history and traditions and to promote citizenship, civic responsibility and patriotism. There are numerous projects and services that VFW Posts and its Auxiliaries offer to promote citizenship in the local community and educational facilities.

National Scouting Team

VFW Service Office: The VFW was founded in 1899 to help veterans of the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection obtain assistance from the government. Today, our Service Officers (Professional Veterans Advocates) file claims and appeals for veterans at no cost to the veteran. The Department of Michigan Service Office has recovered an average of $75,000,000 in disability claims, on behalf of Michigan's veterans, over the past few years.

Boy Scouts of America includes the sponsoring of more than 1,200 Scouting units with 40,000 members across the nation. In addition, the VFW honors an outstanding scout through the VFW Scout of the Year Scholarship program.

Michigan Overseas Veteran reports on the Positive positive impact of the Veterans of Foreign Warson the Michigan Community.

Michigan Veterans Trust Fund: The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Michigan have two members who serve on the Board of Trustee's helping veterans and their families in need.
 
Michigan Home for Veterans, Grand Rapids, MI and Marquette, MI:
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Michigan have two members that serve on the Board. VFW Posts around the State donate clothes, personal items like shampoo deodorant & soap. In addition, they raise funds for entertainment and miscellaneous unmet needs of the patients. The VFW also works closely with our legislators to ensure our veterans receive the proper care at the Homes.

Jobs for Michigan's Veterans: The VFW's National Veterans Employment Assistance Service strives to ensure the employment rights and benefits of veterans in the workplace. This is achieved by working directly with with federal and state agencies, as well as congressional representatives."

Karmanos Cancer Institute: The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Michigan began a program in 1983 to furnish monetary aide for cancer research and dedicated the funds to Karmanos. The VFW has donated over $1,200,000 since 1983, all funds collected are used for direct research with no administrative costs by the VFW.

National Military Service:

Military Assistance Programs assist families of deployed service members with home repairs, appliance purchases, rent and other financial issues. The VFW has paid for travel for family members to visit their loved ones in hospitals throughout the world.

Unmet Needs Assists families with large expensive items.

Operation Uplink Provides calling cards and phone centers (cafes) to hospitalized and deployed service members.

Adopt a Unit The VFW provides military units with entertainment, toiletries and other items that help the unit members during their deployment.

Hospital Programs: The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Auxiliaries voluntarily and enthusiastically donate time and money, along with offering friendship and compassion, at the Michigan Home for Veterans in both Grand Rapids and Marquette, plus the five VA Medical Centers in Michigan, in an effort to help our sick and wounded patriots. VFW Posts, Auxiliaries, Districts, Departments and the National VFW donate wheel chairs, electric scooters, walkers and other hospital equipment.

Youth Scholarship Programs provide more than $3.5 million in scholarships to our nation's youth. By providing leaders, funding, sponsorships and other resources, the VFW and its Auxiliaries encourage America's young adults to higher ideals and greater personal achievement. These scholarship programs include Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition, Patriot's Pen Essay Contest and Scout of the Year.
