President Kennedy said once "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." There are few ways less noble to serve our country than through the military. The courage and strength that you all exude are qualities which deserve only our highest gratitude. I cannot thank you enough for what you have done.

Karmanos' visit to Mid- Winter

The Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars Supports Karmanos’ Prostate Cancer Research Program

Karmanos Cancer Institute officials recently met with members of the Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars to accept a check that will support prostate cancer research at Karmanos. Pictured from left to right are, Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars State Commander Gerald J. Gorski; Director of Prostate Cancer Research at Karmanos and Hartmann Endowed Chair for Prostate Cancer Research, Associate Center Director, Translational Sciences, Chair, Genitourinary Oncology Multidisciplinary Team, Professor of Oncology and Medicine, Director, Prostate Cancer Research Elisabeth Heath, M.D., F.A.C.P.; Director of Development Lynn Fisher; and VFW National Commander-in-Chief Brian Duffy.

The Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) presented the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute with a generous gift of $13,832.80 for cancer research at the 38th Annual Mid-Winter Conference in Lansing in January. This support represents donations collected under the tenure of Past State Commander Paul McIvor. For the past several years, Michigan veterans have raised funds through local Posts to support the Karmanos Prostate Cancer Research Program. Veteran Posts throughout Michigan conduct a multitude of annual events in their communities to raise awareness of and funding for cancer research. This fundraising effort is guided by State Cancer Director James Proteau through the VFW State Headquarters.

"Our Michigan veterans are providing crucial support for our clinicians and scientists who are on the front lines of pioneering cancer research, and for our patients who are battling this terrible disease,” said Dr. Heath. "It’s critical that we continue to work together to move promising cancer research from the lab to the clinic. We must also focus on training the next generation of research scientists so that we remain on the leading edge of scientific discovery while providing every patient with direct access to the best cancer treatments that are currently available.”

The Department of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars began a program in 1983 to furnish monetary aid for cancer research and dedicated their funds to Karmanos. Through community service, advocacy and fundraising, the VFW members have donated more than $1.2 million since the program’s inception.

We thank all of our Michigan veterans for their service to our country and we remain grateful for their unwavering fundraising efforts to advance cancer research.
