ABOUT MICHIGAN VFW

The Department of Michigan, Veterans of Foreign Wars was chartered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States on November 14, 1920.  The Department was headquartered in Detroit.
 
The Department of Michigan, VFW is currently comprised of 239 Posts in 12 Districts within the State of Michigan.  For a roster of current local Post, District and Department leaders please see the Department Roster under the Members Only tab on this website. 
 
The Department is proud to be partners with the Auxiliary (formally known as the Ladies Auxiliary), and the Military Order of the Cootie Grand of Michigan. 

The Department Headquarters is located at 924 N. Washington Ave, Lansing, MI  48906.  Originally housed in an office building at this address, our current home was dedicated on June 17, 1969.
 
Michigan is proud to be the home of four Past National Commanders-in-Chief of the VFW and five Past National Auxiliary Presidents.
 
The Headquarters building presently is home to the VFW Headquarters staff and the Auxiliary Headquarters staff.
 
The Department of Michigan is incorporated in the State of Michigan.  The Department has been granted IRS non-profit status as a 501(C) 19 non-profit organization.  Our EIN is 38-1133442.
 
The Department of Michigan is the sole owner of VFW Camp Trotter for Children located in Newaygo County, a seasonal children's summer camp operated by the Department under the direction of a Board of Directors and licensed by the State of Michigan.  Camp Trotter is separately incorporated in the State of Michigan.
 
The Department of Michigan also owns VFW Charities of Michigan, incorporated in the State of Michigan and granted IRS 501 (C) 3 status as a non-profit corporation.  VFW Charities of Michigan operates under the direction of a Board of Directors.  VFW Charities EIN is 46-1413679.  VFW Charities allows the Department to receive charitable donations from corporate or foundation donors which require that their donations go to a 501(C)3 non-profit.  We may then use those donations in support of our mission or as stipulated by the donor to include the passage of the donation to a local VFW Post.
 
In addition to our Headquarters staff, the Department also employs a professional staff of service officers under the direction of the Department Director of Veterans Services (Department Service Officer).  The Service Office's primary location is co-located with VA Regional Office at the McNarmarra Federal Building, 477 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI  48226.  The Service Office has a number of Assistant State Service Officers which work at remote locations around the State.  The VFW Service Office is a member of the Michigan Veteran's Service Coalition with other VSOs in Michigan for the purpose of State of Michigan grant funding of their operations.

The Department of Michigan is a member of the Big Ten Conference, one of four regional conferences in the VFW.  The Conferences are quasi-official groups within the VFW providing a system of selecting National VFW leadership.  See the information page under the ABOUT TAB to learn more about the Big Ten Conference.
