Each year, the VFW of Michigan recognizes the outstanding service of Michigan first responders. We believe in service, whether at home or abroad, and are honored to recognize these special public servants who dedicate themselves to the protection of the American people every day. On June 1, 2025 the VFW State Commander, Ray Lopez, was honored to recognize four deserving public servants for their service to community during 2023-2024. Congratulations to each them of them and to the VFW Posts which nominated them.
23-24 Department EMT/Paramedic of the Year: Paramedic Saralynn Bush, an EMT out of Livingston County, and sponsored by VFW Post 6464 in Fowlerville
23-24 Department Law Enforcement Officer of the Year: Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant Christopher Suarez, sponsored by VFW Post 2406 in Charlotte
23-24 Department Firefighter of the Year: Captain Richard A. Carlson from the Negaunee Fire Department and sponsored by VFW Post 3165 in Negaunee.
