District 13 Commander - Marines

              I served in the United States Marine Corps as an Artilleryman from February 1970 to June 1973 and again from November 1980 to June 2000 when I retired.  During my 23 plus years of service I was stationed at Quantico, Va with the Field Artillery Demonstration Battery, NAS Marine Barracks Guam 70-72, F Btry, 2d Bn, 10thMarines, Camp LeJeune, NC 72-73, CivDiv, Alpena, Michigan 73-80,  Re-enlisted in 1980 and reported to 1st155 MCAGCC 29 Palms, Ca 80-82.  In 1982 I re-enlisted again and reported for duty aboard the USS New Jersey as part of the Marine Detachment and was appointed 5 inch/38 mount captain, we distinguished ourselves as the best 5 inch gun mount on the ship.  During 1983 the New Jersey was on duty off the coast of Lebanon providing naval gunfire to the Marines at the Beirut Airport.  On 23 Oct 1983 a terrorist drove a truck loaded with explosives into the Marine Barracks at the airport killing 241 Marines and Sailors.  This is where I earned my first eligibility for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  In March of 1984 I rotated off the battleship and was transferred to E Btry, 10th Marines, 2d MarDiv, CLNC.  While at Camp LeJeune I honed my warfighting skills and attended Operations Chiefs School at Fort Sill, Ok.  In 1987 I was promoted to SSgt and transferred to C Btry, 1st Bn, 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade. I deployed to Saudi Arabia in Aug of 1990 as part of the advance party for 1/12 and later 1 MEF.  During the Persian Gulf’s Desert Shield / Desert Storm War, earning my 2d eligibility in the Veterans of Foreign Wars.   In 1991 I was transferred to I&I Duty, D Btry, 2d Bn, 14th Marines, Waterloo, Iowa.  While assigned to I&I I was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in 1993 and was transferred back to Camp Lejeune and assigned to the regimental S-3 shop and Fire Direction Center.  While assigned to 10th Marines Regiment I attended USA Battle Staff Course at Fort Bliss, TX.  I was promoted to Master Sergeant in 1997 and transferred back to 1stBn, 12 Marines as the Battalion Operations Chief.  I retired in 2000.     

While in the Marine Corps I earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal.

   I am a Life Member of the Ernest G Shreeves, VFW Post 2496, honorably served as Post Commander for 3 years 2015-2018.  

   I have been happily married for 6 years now to Gloria Plater, we share 4 children 2 daughters Jessica and Chelsey and two boys Eric and Jacob.
