I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from January 1964 to January 1968. I served aboard the U.S.S. William M. Wood DD715 as a Machinery Repairman 3rd Class from September 1964 to January 1968. I earned my eligibility for the Veterans of Foreign Wars during the Dominican Republic Conflict.
After my enlistment, I returned home and started working for the Kmart Corporation in March 1968, started my higher education at Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan and started raising a Family. I started with Kmart as a Stockman, managed Kmart & Kresge Stores, held many other positions at Kmart Headquarters in Troy, Michigan and retired as a Buyer with 32 Years of Service in November 2000.
My Education consists of a Master's Degree in General Administration from Central Michigan University, both a Bachelor's & Associate's Degrees in Supervision from Purdue University in Indiana and an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts from Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan.
I have (4) Children and (3) Grandchildren living in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Hampstead, North Carolina.
I joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in March 2005 because of My Childhood Friend, Denver Kirk. Denver and I buried his Father, a World War II Navy Veteran. After we buried his Father, Denver took me down to the VFW Post in Center Line, Michigan and said he was going to buy me a beverage. Denver bought me that beverage but he also put a VFW Application in front of me and said, "I am going to pay your 1st Year's Membership Dues". Well, how was I to tell my Childhood Friend that I don't want to join the VFW? So, I joined in March 2005. Next month, April 2005 was Elections. I was elected the Post Junior Vice Commander. I did not know anything about the VFW let alone the position of Post Junior Vice Commander. My Post Commander Dave Crabtree gave me his "Post Commander's Manual" and said, "Read it from cover to cover, attend the County Council Meetings, attend the District Meetings, attend the State Conferences & State Convention and you will learn!". So, I did and the rest is history.
I was elected the Post Commander in June 2008, after being elected the Post Junior Vice Commander in April 2005, (2) years earlier. I became an All-State Post Commander in my 1st Year (2009) and also (3) more times afterwards (2010, 2012, 2013) at (2) different Posts (6756 & 6250). I also was an All-State Post Commander and an All-State District Commander in the "same" year (2013). I could "not" have been successful without the help of my Post Members and my District Members! I did not do it alone. It was a TEAM EFFORT! Thank You!
I have held many elected positions over the years. Some of these are All-State Post Commander (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013), Macomb County Council Commander (2011-2012), All-State District Commander (2012-2013), State Surgeon & Hospital Director (2013-2014), State Commander (2016-2017), Big Ten Vice Chairman (2017-2018), Big Ten Chairman (2018-2019) and now National Council of Administration Member (2019-2023). Again I did not do it alone. It was a TEAM EFFORT! All the Members along the way helped me become successful! Thank You!
I have also held many National Level Appointments including National Budget & Finance Committee (2019-2020) Veterans Service Committee Member (2019), Chairman of the National VFW Programs Committee (2017-2018), General Resolutions Committee Member (2014, 2017, 2018, 2021), National Foreign Relations & Security Committee Member (2013) and National Aide de Camp to Commander-in-Chief Thomas Tradewell (2009).
Today, I am a Candidate for National Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief 2023-2024. I want to continue serving the Members of the Department of Michigan and the Members of our National Organization. I want to be the VOICE of the Members or the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who cannot speak for themselves. As many of you know, I am not afraid to stand up and speak on your behalf. I have done this two years in a row in order to save our Voice of Democracy Washington DC Trip for our Department Voice of Democracy Winners from being eliminated and replaced.
I believe in "Teamwork, Leadership and Commitment". I used these words on the front cover of my Department Roster Book when I was your State Commander 2016-2017. I use these words "everyday". These words were even used on our Department of Michigan Website.
I want to Thank "Everyone" again, who have helped me throughout my Career with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). You have had faith in me all these years, as I progressed. I promise to do my Very Best for YOU and our Department of Michigan as YOUR National Council of Administration Member representing the Department of Michigan.
I want to thank the Department of Michigan, the Districts throughout the Department of Michigan including my District 5, the Macomb & Oakland County Councils and my Post 2645 Southfield for your Endorsements for my Candidacy for National Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief 2023-2024.
