Ricky Young
District 10 Commander - Army

Ricky R. Young graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1980.  He enlisted in the Army in 1984.  After completing basic training, he was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. During the first Gulf War Ricky was stationed at Darmstadt, Germany. After eight and a half years, he joined the Army Reserves where he rose to Sergeant First Class. While serving as a Reservist he was deployed to Kuwait during Operation Iraqi Freedom, which is where he earned his eligibility for the VFW. His deployment was extended to fifteen months, making him part of the largest push of troops and equipment since WWII. Ricky retired from the military after 36 years of service.

 In 2006, Ricky joined the VFW as a Life Member.  As a Post member he served on the Post Honor Guard, as Post Commander 2007-2008, and as a Post Quartermaster 2011-2012. He has worked diligently alongside the Auxiliary, in and out of the kitchen, to raise funds for a variety of projects.

Ricky has always been active within District 10.  He has worked as a District Chairman for Buddy Poppy and Hospitality.  He has held the offices of Officer of the Day, Sargeant at Arms, Junior Vice, Senior Vice, and District Commander from 2009-2010.

Ricky has also served on the State Honor Guard for most of the last decade.  As a member of the Camp Trotter Board, he has fulfilled the role of Fundraising Chairman for the last three years, successfully organizing the Camp Trotter annual golf fundraiser. He has also served as State Buddy Poppy Director 2015-2016, 2018-2019 for two separate years.

Ricky has also been appointed National Aide De-Camp 2019-2020, 2022-2023 and National Deputy Chief of Staff 2010-2011.

Currently, Ricky is a Lieutenant for the State Honor Guard, on the Camp Trotter Board as the Fundraising Chairman, Junior Vice at Flint Post 822, and District 10 Commander for 2023-2024. He is also a Life Member of the American Legion and AMVETS.

His family includes fiancée Kelly, son Ricky, stepdaughter Barbara, and grandson Alex.
